I was a 30154, direct conversion to a 32854, and received my 7-level (32874)
while in Udorn. I remember we had a "J" in front of the numbers, but I
don't remember if that was at Udorn or not. I repaired the ASN-46/48/63/75
Inertial Navigation Systems on assigned F-4D and RF-4C aircraft, the APQ-109
(I think that was it's designation) Forward Looking Radar System on assigned
RF-4C and TDY AC-119K aircraft, and the ASN-35/APN-147 Navigation
Computer/Doppler Navigation Systems on assigned C-130 aircraft.
Occasionally we would work on transient aircraft. At Udorn, the assigned
squadrons were the 13th and 555th Tactical Fighter Squadrons and the 11th
and 14th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadrons, along with the 7th Airborne
Command, Communication, and Control Squadron. My job entailed working on
the aircraft and in the shop. For a time, about 3 months, I was the night
shift supervisor of Wing Maintenance Debriefing, where we collated the day's
flying records, and debriefed the aircrews regarding any malfunctions they
encountered on their missions. With my equipment averaging 30 hours MTBF
(Mean Time Between Failures) we had lots to do, all the time. Our shop was
very large, but I don't remember how many we had assigned. We worked 12
hours a day, 6 days a week, sometimes 7 days a week, from January to
December, 1970.
